BASICS OF BIOTRANSFORMATIONS

Course ID: NBT/BŻ-SE>PBIOINF
Course title: BASICS OF BIOTRANSFORMATIONS
Semester: 5 / Winter
ECTS: 6
Lectures/Classes: 15 / 45 hours
Field of study: Biotechnology
Study cycle: 1st cycle
Type of course: compulsory
Prerequisites: organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology
Contact person: dr inż. Jarosław Popłoński; jaroslaw.poplonski@upwr.edu.pl
Short description: The Basics of biotransformations provides a background to biocatalysis using enzymes and microorganisms for functional group interconversion (i.e. hydrolysis reaction, oxidation/reduction reactions, C-C bond formations). The course covers basic biotransformation techniques and procedures, improvement of biotransformation yield and examples for applications of biotransformation for production of drugs, food components, fine chemicals and chiral intermediates.
Full description: Advantages and disadvantages of enzymatic reactions. Hydrolytic reactions. Enzymatic reduction of the carbonyl group. Hydroxylation reactions catalyzed by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases. Synthesis of hydroxy derivatives involving dehydrogenases. Enzymatic degradation of the sterol side chain. Application of biotransformations in chemistry of steroids. Isomerization reactions catalyzed by enzymes. Application of biotransformations in food industry
Bibliography: Compulsory: 1. Biotransformations in Organic Chemistry, Faber K., Springer-Verlag, 2011. Supplementary: 1. Practical Methods for Biocatalysis and Biotransformations, Whittall J., Sutton P., Wiley, 2009.
Learning outcomes: After completing the course student In terms of knowledge: 1. knows examples of industrial application of biotransformations, 2. explains mechanisms of the reactions most often used in biotransformations, 3. indicates type of biocatalyst for selected transformations. In terms of skills: 1. performs microbial transformations on their own: prepare biocatalysts, isolate products, determine parameters of the process, control transformation progress, 2. operates analytical equipment, 3. processes data - analyze and interpret the results. In terms of social competences: 1. is able to work in a team.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: 50% of the lecture test, 50% of the exercises
